One thing about RIM Blackberry is its full QWERTY keyboard. The QWERTY keyboard is tiny but technically supreme in every aspect. The Blackberry devices like Pearl( 8100) and 7100 series use “ Sure Type” technology and have a reduced-key keyboard. With SureType each key represents multiple symbols, numbers and letters. There is also a prediction dictionary in the keyboard, which figures out what a user will want.
For the BlackBerry, RIM offers an operating system or OS, which is multi-tasking and proprietary. This OS makes much use of the specialized input devices, particularly of the thumbwheel. For WAP 1.2 and MIDP 1.0, support is provided by the OS. A subset of MIDP 2.0 is provided by OS 4. This allows wireless synchronization and activation with contacts, notes, tasks, calendar and with Exchange’s e-mail. This also adds support for Lotus Notes and Novell GroupWise.
Software can be write by third-party developers using the APIs. They can use BlackBerry APIs or any application, which is digitally signed for an association to developer account at RIM.
BlackBerry devices have the ability to read e-mail received in realtime anywhere and is the reason why it is infamously addictive. Thus BlackBerry has earned the name “ CrackBerry.” The model families of BlackBerry are named after several subatomic particles like Charm, Quack, Baryon, Proton, Electron, Tachyon and Tachyon.
