Simon was shown at COMDEX, the trade show of computer industry in 1992 in Los Angles in Nevada in USA. In 1993 Simon was released publicly. BellSouth sold Simon. Simon was a mobile phone with additional features like e-mail, a calendar, games, facility of receiving and sending fax, note pad, world clock, address book and a calculator. Simon featured a touch-screen system instead of physical buttons. The customers didn’t had to press buttons, they had to touch the screen with their fingers for selecting phone numbers. With optional stylus the customers could create memos and facsimiles. The customers entered text on Simon with a “predictive” on-screen keyboard.
The next creation, which hit the mobile market, was Nokia 9000. This smartphone hit the market in 1996. The name of the smartphone was Communicator. Communicator is considered the first smartphone lines in the world of mobile phones. Ericsson R380 was also a smartphone. Then came Nokia 9210 in the market, which was the proper smartphone in every sense. This phone has an open operating system. It was referred to as a Communicator by Nokia.
Nokia 7650 was the next Nokia smartphone, which was announced in the year 2001. In the Nokia support site the phone is referred to as “smartphone”. It was referred to as “imaging phone” in the press release. In the year 2002 Microsoft announced that its OS mobile phone will be known as “Microsoft Powered Smartphone 2002”.
