It is not easy to define a smartphone. Thre is no standard definition of smartphone. David Wood defined smartphone in his way as dissimilar to typical mobile phones in two essential ways, their activity meaning what they are capable of doing and their built.
Now let’s enter the interesting history of smartphones. IBM designed the first smartphone, Simon in 1992. Simon was shown at a computer trade show, COMDEX, which was held in Las Vegas in the US state of Nevada. In 1993 Simon was publicy released and Simon was sold by BellSouth. Simon was something more than a typical mobile phone. Simon apart from the typical mobile phone features had features like:
- E-Mail
- Games
- Facility to receive and send FAX
- Address Book
- NotePad
- Calculator
- World Clock
- Calendar
Simon did not have buttons. The technique was touch-screen. The customers did select phone numbers using a touch-screen with their fingers. Memos and facsimile were created with optional stylus. The keyboard is on-screen “ predictive” and through it text were entered in an unique way.
Simon was the first smartphone and if compared with today’s high-end models it is technically primitive
