A smartphone is essentially a mobile phone and beyond it. Smartphones are mobile phone with several technical capabilities than a simple mobile phone. Smartphones functions like PC. Smartphone is very difficult to define. To some a smartphone is a mobile phone with advanced technical features.
To others a smartphone combines the technical superiority of operating system software, a platform to develop application and a standardized interface.

One thing about smartphones is that they have no single accepted definition. The definitions of smartphone have been changing since its inception. David Wood defined smartphones in his own unique way. He defined smartphones as different from typical mobile phones, particularly in two basic ways, one is their built and the other is their activities.

The first smartphone was designed in 1992 by IBM and was named Simon. It was shown at COMDEX as a concept, the trade show was held in Las Vegas in Nevada. Apart from being a mobile phone the other features of the smartphone were games, facility of receiving and sending FAX, e-mail, notepad, calculator, world clock, address book and calendar. This phone was without buttons. The system was touch-screen by which the customers select phone numbers and could create memos and facsimilies with optional stylus.

However, many consider the Nokia 9000, which entered the market in the year 1996, named Communicator as the first smartphone.
